Old is a 2021 American thriller directed by M. Night Shyamalan, based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. When several vacationing families arrive at an idyllic, secluded beach at a luxury resort, they discover that the beach causes rapid aging — approximately one year of aging every 30 minutes — effectively trapping them because any attempt to leave triggers seizures and unconsciousness.
As children become teenagers, adults develop age-related diseases, and elderly guests die of old age within hours, the group must determine what is causing the phenomenon and find a way to escape before their entire lifetimes pass in a single day. M. Night Shyamalan created an effectively claustrophobic horror premise — the beach as a beautiful, inescapable prison — and the body horror of watching rapid aging was viscerally disturbing.
The revelation that the resort is deliberately using the beach to test pharmaceuticals on unwitting guests provided the trademark Shyamalan twist. Old earned $90 million worldwide on a $18 million budget.
