Over the Hedge is a 2006 American animated comedy produced by DreamWorks Animation. Bruce Willis voices RJ, a scheming raccoon who must repay a massive food debt to an angry bear named Vincent, voiced by Nick Nolte, within one week or be eaten. RJ manipulates a family of naive woodland animals โ including a cautious turtle voiced by Garry Shandling, an excitable squirrel voiced by Steve Carell, and a family of porcupines โ into raiding the suburban homes that have encroached on their forest during their winter hibernation.
The film satirized suburban American consumerism through the animals' bewildered discovery of SUVs, junk food, and HOA regulations. Steve Carell's hyperactive squirrel Hammy, who experiences caffeine for the first time in the film's climax with time-stopping results, was a comedic highlight. Over the Hedge earned $336 million worldwide on a $80 million budget.
The film further demonstrated the franchise's enduring global commercial appeal and its ability to attract audiences across diverse international markets.
