Ready Player One (2018)

Ready Player One is a 2018 American science fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on Ernest Cline's 2011 novel. Set in 2045, the film depicts a dystopian world where most of humanity escapes their bleak reality by logging into the OASIS, a vast virtual reality universe created by the eccentric genius James Halliday, played by Mark Rylance. When Halliday dies, he leaves behind a challenge: whoever solves three elaborate puzzles hidden within the OASIS will inherit his half-trillion dollar fortune and control of the virtual world.

Wade Watts, a young orphan played by Tye Sheridan, joins millions of "gunters" competing to find Halliday's Easter egg while battling IOI, an evil corporation that wants to monetize the OASIS. Ready Player One was one of the most technically complex films of Spielberg's career, requiring the seamless integration of live-action footage with entirely virtual environments populated by digital avatars. The film featured an extraordinary density of pop culture references spanning four decades, including characters and vehicles from virtually every major entertainment franchise — a licensing feat that required negotiations with dozens of rights holders.

The most celebrated sequence takes place inside a virtual recreation of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, with the digital avatars navigating the Overlook Hotel. Ready Player One earned $582 million worldwide. Spielberg, who deliberately avoided referencing his own extensive filmography in the pop culture-heavy film, brought his characteristic sense of wonder and adventure to a story that fundamentally asked what we lose when virtual experience replaces genuine human connection.
