The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is a 2021 American supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves, the third installment in the main Conjuring series. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, who investigate the first known U.S. murder case in which the defense claimed demonic possession โ the real-life 1981 trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson in Connecticut. The investigation leads the Warrens to discover that a satanic curse has been deliberately placed on the Johnson family by an occultist, and they must find and stop the source before more people die.
The film departed from the haunted-house formula of the first two installments, functioning more as a supernatural detective story that took the Warrens on the road through morgues, underground tunnels, and witch's lairs. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It earned $206 million worldwide on a $39 million budget.
