The Huntsman: Winter's War is a 2016 American fantasy action adventure directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, both a prequel and sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman. Chris Hemsworth returns as Eric the Huntsman, whose origin is revealed — he was trained as a warrior in the army of the Ice Queen Freya, played by Emily Blunt, Ravenna's sister who rules a frozen northern kingdom and forbids love among her soldiers. When Eric and fellow warrior Sara, played by Jessica Chastain, fall in love and are punished, the stage is set for a conflict between Freya and the resurrected Ravenna, played again by Charlize Theron.
Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron's performances as rival queens brought gravitas and genuine menace to the fantasy, though the film's plot struggled to justify its existence as a continuation of a story that had been designed to stand alone. The Huntsman earned $165 million worldwide on a $115 million budget.
