The Matrix Resurrections is a 2021 American science fiction action film directed by Lana Wachowski, a belated fourth installment in the Matrix franchise arriving 18 years after Revolutions. Keanu Reeves returns as Thomas Anderson, a successful video game designer living in San Francisco who created a trilogy of games called "The Matrix" based on what he believes are delusions โ his therapist, played by Neil Patrick Harris, keeps him medicated and grounded in "reality." When a new Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and a character called Bugs, played by Jessica Henwick, appear and reveal that his reality is once again a simulation, Thomas must choose the red pill once more. Lana Wachowski directed alone for the first time without her sister Lilly, and infused the film with an intensely meta-textual quality โ the characters explicitly discuss sequels, reboots, and Warner Bros.'s desire to make another Matrix with or without the creators' involvement.
The film earned $157 million worldwide on a $190 million budget, a commercial disappointment.
