Transformers: Dark of the Moon is a 2011 American science fiction action film directed by Michael Bay, the third installment in the franchise. The film reveals that the 1969 Moon landing was actually a secret mission to investigate a crashed Autobot spacecraft on the lunar surface containing Sentinel Prime, Optimus Prime's predecessor, and a technology called the Space Bridge capable of teleporting matter across vast distances. When Sentinel Prime is revived and his true allegiance is revealed, the Decepticons launch an invasion of Chicago using the Space Bridge to transport their forces directly into the city, leading to a massive, extended battle that dominates the film's final hour.
The Chicago battle sequence, which consumed approximately 45 minutes of screen time, was Michael Bay's most ambitious and destructive set piece โ featuring buildings collapsing with people sliding through tilting glass corridors, wing-suit soldiers gliding between toppling skyscrapers, and Optimus Prime tearing through Decepticons with a sword and shield. The sequence was filmed extensively on location in Chicago's downtown streets. Transformers: Dark of the Moon earned $1.12 billion worldwide, the franchise's highest gross, though it was also the first film in the series to be shot in 3D.
