Wonder is a 2017 American family drama directed by Stephen Chbosky, based on R.J. Palacio's 2012 novel. Jacob Tremblay stars as August "Auggie" Pullman, a 10-year-old boy with Treacher Collins syndrome who has undergone 27 surgeries on his face and has been homeschooled his entire life.
When Auggie enters fifth grade at a private school in Manhattan, he must navigate the cruelty and curiosity of classmates who have never seen a face like his, while his family — including his mother played by Julia Roberts, father played by Owen Wilson, and older sister Via — deals with the emotional impact of a life organized around Auggie's condition. The film's most effective structural choice was shifting perspective between Auggie and several other characters — Via's loneliness from years of her parents' attention focused on her brother, Auggie's friend Jack Will's struggle between loyalty and social pressure, and Via's boyfriend Justin's outsider perspective — creating a rounded portrait of how one child's difference affects an entire community. Jacob Tremblay, wearing prosthetic makeup that took 90 minutes to apply daily, delivered a performance of remarkable warmth and humor.
