Documentaries are the genre where critics and audiences actually tend to agree the most. But there are still hidden gems that fly under the radar and crowd-pleasers that critics undervalue.
Kanopy is free with a card from many public libraries and universities, with no ads. These are its documentary movies that audiences rated highest.
These documentaries earned their rankings from real viewers. Whether they're eye-opening, heartbreaking, or mind-blowing, they all deliver.
Every movie on this list is completely free to stream and ranked by ThumbScore — the percentage of everyday people who liked the film. No subscriptions needed, no hidden costs.
