Geostorm is a 2017 American science fiction disaster film directed by Dean Devlin. Gerard Butler stars as Jake Lawson, the designer of a vast network of climate-controlling satellites called Dutch Boy that was built to prevent catastrophic weather events. When the satellite system begins malfunctioning β creating devastating, targeted weather events including frozen tsunamis in Dubai, fireballs in Hong Kong, and lightning storms in Orlando β Jake must travel to the International Space Station to uncover a conspiracy to weaponize the system.
Dean Devlin, longtime producing partner of Roland Emmerich, made his directorial debut with a film that aspired to Emmerich-scale disaster spectacle but was plagued by extensive reshoots overseen by Jerry Bruckheimer. Geostorm earned $221 million worldwide on a $120 million budget, a commercial loss. The film confirmed the commercial viability of its franchise approach and demonstrated the property's appeal to its target audience worldwide.
