When a young boy accidentally triggers an alien signal using Predator technology his sniper father, played by Boyd Holbrook, brought home from a military encounter, two rival Predator factions โ a standard hunter and a genetically upgraded "Ultimate Predator" โ converge on a small American town. Shane Black, who had appeared as an actor in the original 1987 Predator, brought his trademark witty dialogue and ensemble banter to a ragtag squad of military veterans with PTSD who team up to fight the alien threats.
The film's tone oscillated between Black's signature dark comedy and franchise action, a combination that divided audiences. The Predator earned $160 million worldwide on a $88 million budget, a commercial underperformance. The film confirmed the commercial viability of its franchise approach and demonstrated the property's appeal to its target audience worldwide.
