The film follows parallel storylines: Kong is transported from Skull Island to the Hollow Earth — a vast subterranean ecosystem beneath the planet's surface — to find a power source that will prevent Godzilla from destroying humanity, while scientists investigate why Godzilla has begun attacking cities after years of coexistence with humans.

The inevitable confrontation between the two Titans unfolds across the ocean, in the neon-lit streets of Hong Kong, and deep beneath the Earth. Adam Wingard wisely committed to delivering the monster battles that audiences wanted without excessive human subplot padding, and the Hong Kong nighttime brawl between Godzilla and Kong — lit by neon signs and building explosions — was the MonsterVerse's most visually spectacular sequence. The film treated both monsters with respect, giving Kong emotional depth through sign language communication with a young deaf girl and establishing Godzilla's aggression as rational rather than villainous.

The introduction of Mechagodzilla as a third-act threat gave both Titans a common enemy and satisfied fans wanting to see them team up. Godzilla vs. Kong earned $470 million worldwide during a hybrid theatrical and HBO Max release.
