Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a 2010 American fantasy action-adventure directed by Mike Newell, based on the Ubisoft video game series and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Prince Dastan, an orphan adopted into the Persian royal family, who must protect the Dagger of Time โ a magical artifact capable of reversing time when filled with the Sands of Time โ from falling into the wrong hands after his adoptive father is murdered. Alongside Princess Tamina, played by Gemma Arterton, guardian of the Sands, Dastan must clear his name and prevent the villain from using the dagger to rewrite history.
The parkour-inspired action sequences, drawing from the video game's acrobatic gameplay, were the film's visual highlight. Prince of Persia earned $336 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, a disappointing return. The casting of Jake Gyllenhaal as a Persian prince was criticized as whitewashing.
