The Passion of the Christ is a 2004 American biblical drama directed by Mel Gibson, depicting the final 12 hours of Jesus Christ's life. Jim Caviezel stars as Jesus, and the film follows his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, his trials before the Sanhedrin and Pontius Pilate played by Hristo Shopov, his brutal scourging by Roman soldiers, his carrying of the cross through Jerusalem, and his crucifixion at Golgotha. The dialogue was entirely in Aramaic, Latin, and Hebrew with subtitles — a choice that gave the film an immediacy and authenticity unprecedented in biblical cinema.
The Passion generated enormous controversy for its graphic, prolonged depiction of Jesus's physical suffering — the scourging scene was approximately 10 minutes of sustained, unflinching brutality that many viewers found genuinely traumatic. Gibson self-financed the $30 million production after every major studio declined, and the film earned $612 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in history at that time and one of the most profitable independent films ever made.
