Fast Five is a 2011 American action film directed by Justin Lin, the fifth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise and the entry that transformed the series from street-racing crime films into a global action blockbuster phenomenon. The film reunites the franchise's principal cast โ Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang, and others โ for an elaborate heist to steal $100 million from a corrupt Brazilian drug lord while being pursued by DSS agent Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson in his franchise debut. The addition of Dwayne Johnson fundamentally changed the franchise's chemistry, and his first confrontation with Vin Diesel โ two of the biggest action stars in Hollywood crashing through walls in a brutal fistfight โ was the moment the series announced its new ambitions.
The climactic vault chase through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, in which two Dodge Chargers drag a ten-ton bank vault through traffic, destroying everything in their path, was the franchise's most spectacular and beloved action set piece.
